My 1994 Miata was working normally for this entire day, but now, upon starting it, I've noticed it's not working on all cylinders (pun shamefully intended). Here are the symptoms: 1) Irregular idle - Usually I idle at 800-850 RPMs consistently. Now, my idle rises and falls in the 650-800 range. I'm not very car savvy, but if I were to describe the sound at idle, I would say my car is choking. 2) Vibration - My entire car shakes noticeably, at idle and during acceleration. 3) Odd sounds - Instead of the usual Miata engine sound, I hear something like "jug-jug-jug-jug" at idle and more audibly during acceleration. 4) Decreased responsiveness - When I'm engaging in a starting gear (1st gear or reverse), I find that I have to rev more than usual to avoid stalling. When I'm actually driving in gear, there is negligible power, and I only hear the "jug-jug-jug." I feel like the car is being held back. 5) Smell - Exhaust is giving out irregular smells of gasoline. The type of bulb to use depends on the light you are changing. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Clean cloth Replacement bulb Step by Step : 1 Turn off the TrailBlazer's engine, and open the hood. The front grille is held in place by 11 clips, with 10 on the outside of the grille and one in the center. 2 Remove all 10 of the clips on the outside of the grille. Make sure to hold on to them as they will be needed to reattach the grille. Pull on the grille after removing the clips. As you pull on the grille, the center clip will pop out. Completely remove the grille from the vehicle. 3 Pull up on the headlamp assembly sliding tabs. They will not come out completely, but instead will allow for enough space to access the headlamp assembly. Disconnect the turn signal wires from the side of the assembly. Disconnect the main electrical wire from the rear of the assembly. 4 Pull the entire assembly out of the vehicle. Each of the bulbs are labeled. Lift the rubber cover off the bulb you wish to change. The low-beam headlight uses 9006 type bulbs, the high-beam headlight uses 9005 type bulbs, the turn signal light uses 3757NA type bulbs, and the side-marker light uses 194 type bulbs. Pull the bulb out of the assembly. Wipe the replacement down with a clean cloth, and use the cloth to push the bulb into the assembly. Reattach the rubber covers. 5 Reconnect the side-marker wire and main electrical wire to the assembly. Place it back into the vehicle, and push down on the two sliding tabs to lock it into place. Place the grille back onto the vehicle, and reattach all 11 clips. Close the hood. Tips & Warnings Halogen bulbs should never be touched with bare hands. Lift out and remove the pads, shims and clips. Installing the New Brake Pads Step by Step : 1 Wipe the brake assembly and the hardware you want to reuse with brake parts cleaner and lint-free towels. 2 Replace the anti-rattle clips, new brake pads and shims on the caliper bracket. 3 Reinstall the brake caliper on its bracket, aligning the caliper and frame mounting holes and install the two mounting bolts finger tight. Tighten the two bolts to 26 foot-pounds (36 Nm) with a torque wrench and a socket. 4 Replace the brake pads on the opposite wheel following steps 5 from the previous section through step 3 of this section. 5 Mount the front wheels and install the lug nuts snugly to keep the wheels flat against the wheel hubs. 6 Lower your Explorer off the safety stands, tighten the wheel lug nuts with the lug wrench and remove the chocks from the rear wheels. 7 Push and release the brake pedal slowly several times until you feel the pedal firm. If you see black smoke and you have a carburetor, the fuel/air mixture may need to be adjusted to a leaner setting. You can find information about adjusting it in Chapter 13. Black smoke from a vehicle with fuel injection usually requires special diagnosis and should be left to a repair facility. You can check to see whether the fuel/air mixture is too rich by running your finger around the inside edge of the tailpipe (first make sure that it's not hot). Honda Insight. * V* Do you smell gasoline? If you just had trouble starting the car, the engine may be flooded. Wait a few minutes and try again. If the smell comes from under the hood area, check your fuel injection system or carburetor to make sure that it isn't leaking fuel. Also check your fuel pump. The gasoline will wash a clean streak across it, which can be seen with the naked eye. Then check for leaks down the fuel line all the way to the fuel tank. Also, check all the fuel lines and hoses. If they've rotted or are disconnected, you'll smell fuel vapors without seeing any leaks. Taking a look under the vehicle after it's been parked overnight may help, but remember that fuel evaporates quickly, so the clues may be stains rather than wet spots. Obviously, you don't want to smoke while you're doing this! But then you never want to smoke when you're working on your car. ft Off Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies Gasoline ignites easily, and gasoline vapors can explode, so if you smell gasoline — and you didn't just fill your tank — find the source of the leak and have it repaired immediately. If your usual repair facility isn't close by, either drive to the closest garage and have them repair it, or call your auto club and have them deal with the leak by either fixing it on the spot or towing the vehicle to a repair facility. Smoke If you see smoke coming from your tailpipe, pay attention to the color for clues to what the problem is: If you see white vapor on a cold morning, disregard it if it stops after the car warms up. If it continues after the car is warm, a cracked engine block or cylinder head or a leaky head gasket may be letting water into the engine. You'll need professional help with this one. If you see black smoke and you have a carburetor, the fuel/air mixture may need to be adjusted to a leaner setting. You can find information about adjusting it in Chapter 13. Black smoke from a vehicle with fuel injection usually requires special diagnosis and should be left to a repair facility. You can check to see whether the fuel/air mixture is too rich by running your finger around the inside edge of the tailpipe (first make sure that it's not hot). If carbon comes off on your finger, the mixture is probably too rich. |
